After the Harpers Ferry raid, led by John Brown in an attempt to free slaves, and the subsequent execution of Brown, one of the soldiers made up the "John Brown's Body" words. A Unitarian minister suggested to Mrs. Howe that she write some "more appropriate" words. Julia wrote new lyrics to this piece - set to a Sunday school hymn's tune. This became the "fight song" of the Union in the Civil War.
